Mr. Bobby Francis, Director of Bands

Bobby FrancisMr. Francis conducts the University Wind Symphony, along with teaching conducting and music education courses. Groups under his direction have performed at Carnegie Hall, the College Band Director's National Association Regional Conference in Kansas, the Texas Music Educator's Association Conference, the CBDNA National Conference in Georgia, and most recently the CBDNA Conference in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He presented a clinic at the 2000 Texas Music Educators Association Conference for a “standing-room only” crowd entitled: “Solutions to Common Ensemble Problems”. He is music director of Texas “Lone Star” Ambassadors for Music, a performing organization consisting of college and high school students from across Texas. The group has had many European performance tours, and will tour Europe again in the near future. Mr. Francis continues as an active concert and marching band clinician and adjudicator throughout the country.

Mr. Brian Youngblood, Associate Director of Bands

Brian YoungbloodMr. Youngblood directs the Horned Frog Marching Band and the TCU Symphonic Band. Before coming to TCU, Mr. Youngblood taught in the public schools for twelve years. He spent his first ten years teaching in the Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD at L.D. Bell High School where his groups received recognition for outstanding performances at festivals throughout Texas. Mr. Youngblood has also served on the faculties at the Texas Tech Band Camp, University of North Texas Drumline Camp, and Stephen F. Austin Summer Percussion Camp. He is active as a drill writer, an arranger for marching band/percussion, and as a clinician and adjudicator. He regularly consults with and writes shows for 20 high school bands in the five state region. His drills won three state championships and placed in the finals at many festivals every year.

 

Mr. James McNair, Jr., Assistant Director of Bands

Brian YoungbloodJames McNair is still a new addition at Texas Christian University. Previous to this appointment at TCU, Mr. McNair taught for ten years in some of the country’s finest band programs including Lake Highlands High School, The Colony High School and Cross Timbers Middle School. In the summer of 2001, Mr. McNair served on the brass staff of the Drum Corps International World Champion Cavaliers from Rosemont, Illinois. Mr. McNair is an active clinician and adjudicator throughout the state and has been a clinician for the Texas Music Educators Convention and Texas Bandmasters Conventions in San Antonio. Mr. McNair is also in high demand as one of the most versatile freelance trombonists in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. Mr. McNair is a former member of “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band in Washington, D.C. where he performed regularly at the White House for the President of the United States, on Marine Band recordings, and on national tours.

 

Mr. Curtis Wilson, Director of Jazz Studies

Mr. Wilson has been at TCU since 1976. Prior to that, he served as Director of Bands at Ashland College; Ashland, Ohio (1972-1976). From 1968-1972 he was on the music faculty of Valley City State College; Valley City, North Dakota. As a professional woodwind performer he has played with Fred Waring and the Pennsylvanians, Glenn Miller - Tex Beneke Orchestra, and many others. His conducting experience ranges from marching band to the Fort Worth Chamber Orchestra. He has music published for the Marching Band, Symphonic Band, and Jazz Ensembles. The TCU Jazz Ensemble has performed at the Montreux jazz Festival in Montreux, Switzerland along with performances in Austria, Hungary, Poland, the Soviet Union and Italy.
